Also, a gain of visibility in the international scene, since it is the first time that the Family Collection wines have been presented to competition. To point out is that Decanter is the largest and most influential wine competition in the world. The contest is organized annually by the prestigious Anglo-Saxon header of the same name.
Platinum and Gold for two unique Priorat wines
The ‘Samsó 108 Anys’ is a wine made from Samsó from a single vineyard of hundred-year-old vines named “El Colomer”. Located in Gratallops, the plot is only 0,37 hectares. Precisely, the name of the wine is that of the variety, Samsó, followed by the mention “108 anys” (‘years’, in Catalan), referring to the age of the vineyard in that vintage, in this case 2018. This designation, common to the entire Collection, responds to the will to value the variety and its origin. The front label informs about the date of harvest and bottling of the wine, as well as the year the vineyard was planted and the total number of bottles of the vintage. Of this 2018, only 863 bottles and 36 magnums have been produced.
Decanter describes it as “a rich, ripe, opulent style with black fruit, floral, liquorice and pepper aromas. Juicy and dense in the mouth with an impressive texture and lovely fruit which carries the alcohol well. Complex, layered and elegant”.
Carmí Salvatge 2018 is a singular blend of Merlot and Grenache from a single-plot in Gratallops of 0,5 hectares. Only 454 bottles have been produced of this vintage, and 24 magnum bottles. Carmí Salvatge is a wine of outstanding personality; deep, delicate and intense. As for Decanter, it shows “lovely ripeness of perfumed plum and wild raspberry. Rounded palate with smooth yet full tannins, slick oak matching and a very long and delicious length of flavour. Beautiful!”.
The Award-winning Wines at Decanter
The Family Collection is made up of five Super Premium wine references. This range responds to BUIL & GINÉ’s firm commitment to position the brand in the high-end segment. They are wines of endemic varieties, representative of the terroir and of the brand. Thus, it is about wines from single plots or from a single vineyard. Vines with very low yields, which give grapes of exceptional quality, with a greater concentration of aromas and flavours. In it’s vinification, the aim is to enhance the expressiveness of the grape and the traits of each vineyard, where the influence of the microclimate and the characteristic slate soil of its origin intervene. The result, five wines with a very marked identity and unique personality. Wines of very limited production, made only in exceptional vintages and with great ageing potential.
This Collection is both the result of the study and rigorous work undertaken since 2003 by the BUIL & GINÉ technical and viticulture area to bottle the purest expression of the endemic varieties and the Priorat terroir. The Collection is completed by three more wines: Samsó 74 Anys, another varietal of Carignan (Samsó is the local name to this variety) from an old vineyard in Gratallops; the Granatxa Distingida single-plot wine, a Grenache from the vines that are planted on a slope of a vineyard in the municipality of Bellmunt del Priorat; and Mas Giné, made from Garnacha and Carignan from a vineyard with century-old vines in Gratallops with the same name.
